About RMN Nurse Jobs

A career in Mental Health Nursing can mean many different things. It is a vast, and growing, field of nursing in the UK. Mental health care spans many areas of treatment and care and in a variety of settings. Mental health tackles and treats diseases, addictions, neuroses, psychoses and personality disorders. A job as a mental nurse can be challenging, rewarding and varied.

Hospital RMNs

A job as an RMN or Registered Mental Nurse will mean many different things. If you speak with an RMN from a Trust, you'll find out about a working environment very different to that in a care home where dementia experience is usually crucial.

Working in a hospital as a Registered Mental Nurse, you'll be working with a team skilled at helping patients who need gentle treatment as well as those who present greater challenges and more demanding situations.

Often, these acute settings will expect nurses trained in medications. The RMN will have the experience and knowledge to know when to administer restraint. And they will have the confidence to command a situation, working with others on the mental health team to help a patient back to fitness.

Treatment and care will take place in an open ward or in an intensive care unit (PICU mental health nurses work in Psychiatric Intensive Care Units). Here patients may have psychoses of varying degrees and of a varying nature warranting admission to a more secure environment until such time as they can be moved to an 'open' ward.

Care Home Registered Mental Nurses

An RMN in a care home will be dealing with very different patients to an RMN in an acute setting. A care home can mean care of many kinds - learning disabilities, physical disabilities, children, adults and the elderly. Most common is elderly care where a Registered General Nurse (RGN) or Registered Mental Nurse is required.

This is a growing field and the requirement for qualified mental nurses in the UK is huge. On the right hand side of this page are some useful links to help you find out more about RMN jobs in the UK.
