Communication for therapyMental health nursing in the modern era requires building strong, therapeutic relationships. A mental health nurse's job demands an understanding of a complex and numerous set of mental health conditions and illnesses. Communication is now seen as a fundamental requirement of a mental health nurse. And, yet, so are other treatments. Because mental health is such a complex issue modern mental health nursing uses a wide variety of skills and tools to treat patients. Medication as well as communication are utilized. To understand the various causes of mental illness or crises is to recognize that each patient has different needs and different causes behind the symptoms. Genetics, social circumstance, biological make-up, substance abuse, personal distress and trauma can all be causes of mental distress and good nursing practice needs to recognize causes, symptoms and treatments.
